Fifteen years before the fateful hunt for Moby-Dick, the Pequod was a newer whaling ship sailing the oceans. As France conquered Algiers in 1830, the threat of Barbary pirates was dying. Nearly 140 years after the Salem Witch Trials, the people of New England were still nervous about magic. Sadly, the slave trade was still active. Note: Although Melville's book was full of racist imagery, the author is doing his best to treat every character with respect in this adventure.
