Description:
The German submarine force’s resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917 resulted in what they came to refer to as “The Killing Time.” With no effective anti-submarine weapons or measures, the Royal Navy was ill-equipped to respond, and the carnage was massive. But it also brought the US into the war. Lecture covers the strategic, geopolitical and technological conditions that led to this campaign, and how it affected the trajectory of human history.

Summary:
US & Japanese subs go to war. US carriers sunk; problems with weapons, doctrine; cutting Japan’s maritime arteries. By Mark McDonagh CAPT USN (ret) of the NSDM, Inc. staff.
Description:
Both US and Japanese submarine forces had prepared dutifully for the Pacific War, but had their problems. The Japanese had perhaps the most impressive submarine forces in the world, but it was designed for and attempted to implement an unworkable doctrine, unchallenged as dogma. The US instantly embraced a workable strategy and had the platforms for it, but in small numbers and with a principal torpedo that didn’t work. Lecture will discuss initial successes and failures. Included: the Japanese submarine that fired the first shots of the war BEFORE the Japanese aircraft arrived over Pearl Harbor; USS Saratoga, torpedo magnet; sinking of USS Wasp; the only aerial bombing of the US ever; correction of the US torpedo problems and the beginning of the annihilation of the Japanese maritime lifeline. Presenter Mark McDonagh CAPT USN (ret) of the National Security Decision Making, Inc staff.
